Heckel bassoon re-finish: the colouring stage. Once the wood is prepared and the stripes are ready, we mix specialist dyes and apply the base colour. Here is a snapshot of the first stage of colour and finish going on. The next stage is to build up the top coat over many days. The colour will be deepened and enriched as the layers are built up.

The sounding length of a contrabassoon! We're currently overhauling a contrabassoon in our workshop, and thought it would be interesting lay out the joints end to end and see the full length of the instrument. This is how long it would be without any bends - our tape measure wasn't long enough!

You don't see one of these too often - a bassoon with a tuning slide for a u-bend! We've only ever seen these a couple of times in our workshop - you can position it further in or out of the bore to influence the tuning of the bassoon. Has anyone else seen or played with one of these?

A quick snapshot of the process of sleeving a moisture damaged bassoon bore using our CNC machinery - we remove the affected wood, and make a hard rubber sleeve which matches exactly the dimensions of the original bore. i have a 4000 series (#4266, made 1901) that's fully refurbished. It spent most of it's life in Philadelphia in the orchestra there. it's a WONDERFUL instrument, very responsive and the TONE is amazing.
